The RamBrick™ system creates quality building blocks for housing and other buildings. Using the system means helping to save on landfill needs, creating job opportunities through skills development, and combating climate change.
How does it work?
USE-IT developed the expertise and know-how to use building rubble and soil destined for landfill to make sustainable and low embodied-energy building bricks for housing and commercial developments. Several production units were built in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape using the RamBrick™ system.
The mix: RamBrick™ is the first, and currently the only, local conventional building material manufactured from 95% recycled materials: waste soil and recycled builder’s rubble. The bricks are composed of 25% mixed inert builder’s waste, 5% cement stabilising agent, and about 70% soil, depending on the soil type available. The mix enables the RamBrick™ to fully comply with innovative building technologies and energy-efficient building guidelines.
The equipment and sizing: Appropriate heavy-duty brick manufacturing machinery sourced from Texas (USA) is currently used to compress the soil, mixed waste and cement stabiliser mixture into the compressed earth bricks (CEBs) that we refer to as the RamBrick™ system.
The machines produce various types of brick sizes for both interior and exterior walls. The current RamBrick™ manufactured CEBs have dimensions of 180 x 356 x 88 mm, which is used for both interior and exterior walls for the South African housing industry. The wider brick dimensions are 256 x 356 x 88 mm and are generally used for double-storey buildings and industrial projects.
Future plans: The planned local manufacturing of our brickmaking machinery will further contribute to cost-effectiveness while adding additional sizes to the bricks that can be made, including the standard South African sized imperial brick of 140 x 356 x 88mm.
The RamBrick™ system was developed through USE-IT, a multi-award winning NGO that is recognised internationally for their innovation in waste beneficiation technologies and products.
The Managing Director of RamBrick™ is Chris Whyte, who has extensive experience in the field of innovative, waste beneficiation solutions.
USE IT Projects (Pty) Limited was registered in 2016 to provide a solid BEE platform and further assist project development and commercialisation of key projects that can unlock the development of the green economy in the country. The majority partner is Mr Bheka Luthuli, a prominent businessman.

The Management Team
RamBrick™ gratefully acknowledges the guidance and support of the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI). The support was given after the USE-IT Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs) that were subsequently rebranded RamBrick™ won the CCDI’s the Better Living Challenge in the Structural Home category in 2015. The Better Living project is an official project of the Cape Town World Design Capital 2014 (WDC2014) programme.

This assistance by the CCDI has been invaluable in further developing the RamBrick™ process, and contributed among others in our system also winning the Gold Award for Recycling and Waste Management at the Eco-Logic Awards for 2015.
